ZAP Comix #1, 1967, 1st Ed, Apex - CGC Grade 8.0,robert crumb, mr natural:
$7681.00

The offered item is a high grade CGC 8.0 VF of the first edition of one of the most important comic books of the 1960s --Zap Comix #1-- and 1 of only 6 ever certified at this CGC tier. With this comic, creator Robert Crumb brought a new tone to the comic book medium and virtually invented the concept of the \"Underground Comic.\" It is estimated that fewer than 5000 copies of the initial printing of this historic first issue were ever produced and some estimates are as low as 1500 (these first printings are differentiated by the words \"PRINTED BY CHARLES PLYMELL\" on the lower left of the back cover). With so few produced and such narrow initial distribution -- rumor has it out of a baby carriage on the Haight! -- it is no surprise that in total, CGC has certified only 71 examples in their 10+ years in business.

Despite the fact that he never worked for \"mainstream\" publishers, R. Crumb is considered one of the most unique and talented voices to ever work in the industry. His influence and reputation extend well beyond the pages of comic books with his work being the basis for films (Fritz the Cat), books, album covers, and even a theatrical production. His works have shown in galleries and museums internationally and he has a reputation among the Fine Art community that many more \"traditional\" artists envy. His works are so sought after that he was able to trade six of his sketchbooks in the 1990s for a villa in France -- that\'s right, a villa. His life and very curious take on the world were documented in the 1994 filmCrumb. This book has long been a Grail among collectors of UGs, but with more and more mainstream collectors becoming aware of Crumb and the significance of this premier issue, interest continues to rise sharply in high quality examples.

\"keep on trucking\"

With Jack Kirby,Will Eisner,Harvey Kurtzman,Gary Panter, and Chris Ware , Crumb was among the artists honoroed in the exhibitions \"Masters of American Comics\" at the Jewish Museum in New York City from 9,16,2006 to 1,28,2007
