ZRS - 4 RING LAYING GOOD YEAR ZEPPELIN AKRON, OHIO, U.S.A. NOV. 7, 1929 - RARE :
$255.00

This rare book commemorated the laying of the master ring of the U.S. Navy Airship Akron ZRS-4.In 1928 the Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation signed contracts with the Bureau of Aeronautics to build two large fleet-type rigid airships designed expressly for strategic scouting work with US Fleet. These sister ships carried airplanes for fighter protection and for scouting. The first of the two was the USS Akron. NAS Lakehurst was homeport for the Akron between October 1931, when she was delivered to the station, and April 1933 when the Akron was lost off Barnegat Light with a heavy loss of life.
The book has come down through the family of Harry C. Gammeter, inventor of the Multigraph Machine (a forerunner of our modern copy machines) and brother John Gammeter who held many patents while working at Goodyear in Akron during this time period. Upon researching the book, I believe it is extremely rare since the only other copy is one that is in the Smithsonian.
It should be noted that the medal on the front cover may be an embossed paper facsimile with raised engraving or possibly the aluminum medal which has been inserted in the hard cover and can be felt slightly on the inside page; however it cannot be removed without ruining the book.
It has been carefully stored in a clean, smoke-free Environment and would make a magnificent addition to any of several aeronautical, U.S. Navy airship and Zeppelin collections.
