Artist\'s Biography:

Zeev Raban (Ravitzki), painter, decorative artist, industrial designer of the Bezalel school style, born 1890, Lodz, Poland.

1912 Came to Jerusalem at invitation of Boris Schatz;

1921 participated in the first \"Tower of David\" Exhibition;

1923 founded \"Workshop for Industrial Art\" with Meir Gur-Arieh;

1923 Published book \"Song of Songs,\" which he designed; Prepared models for sculpture and metalwork for YMCA building, Jerusalem;

Was a member of the \"Menorah\" Group.

Zeev Raban was the designer who, more than others, influenced the creation of the \"Bezalel style\", whether in book illustration, silver objects or playing cards.

He combined Oriental motifs and Western design, depicting Eretz Israel scenes through a biblical and ideological filter.

Died 1970, Jerusalem.

Teaching

From 1914 Bezalel, headed the Repousse Department, taught anatomy and composition.

Upon his arrival in Jerusalem in 1912, Ze’ev Raban was invited to join the faculty of the Bezalel School of Art and Crafts by its founder, Boris Schatz.

There he worked as director of the repoussé workshop and as teacher of anatomy and decorative arts.

He also served as principal designer for the applied art studios where carpets, metalwork, ceramics, and woodwork were made for the commercial market.

Raban was much influenced by the Art Nouveau and Symbolism he has seen in Munich, Brussels, and Paris, where he studied sculpture and decorative arts.

These influences played a significant part Raban’s personal style, which in turn helped define what came to be known as the Bezalel style.
