This bolo tie isan early, beautiful, Zuni (New Mexico),raised and carved mosaic Rams Head. The inlay is raised (see the second photo below), expertlycarved, and virtually perfect. These are all characteristics of the famous Zuni lapidary Qualo family.The Rams Head isalso expertly inlayed into natural brown stone. Although the tie is unsigned, itcertainly was made by someone in the Qualo family, most likely Effie Qualo. She is well known for this design, although Elliot Qualo did similar designs. I believe that this is one of herearlier Rams Head bolos because of theunusual silver border. The border on this tie is completely different from those on her later ties. Perhaps in this time period she had not yet settled on a preferred choice of border, andmaybe was experimenting. I have never seen another one of her Rams Head bolo ties with thisvery differentstyle border.

The tie is 2\" high and 1-7/8\" wide, which is smaller than most of her later ones.This tie hasa late 1960s-early 1970s marked Bennett clasp for attaching the cord (see thefifth and sixth photos below).

The original four-ply black leather strap is inexcellent condition andis extremely soft and pliable. The 2-1/4\" silver tips also appear to be original and arenicely stamped (see thethird, fourth, and seventh photos below).
