Zuni BOWMAN PAYWA Deer Tie Bar Necklace Mosaic Inlay \"Book Piece\" 1950s:

Welcome!

This was a mystery!  I have wanted this deer for so long and it hasn\'t disappointed me. It is perfection. It\'s a dangling tie bar but easily converted to be a necklace by changing the short chain for a long chain. Julalita Lamy was known for this figure, which you can see in the book \"Zuni The Art and The People Volume 2\" which I included in the third from the last picture above, made the design over the years but did not make that many of them. Those that were made are treasured in private collections, so it is hard to find them. This is the most delightful little deer and it is in perfect condition. To my surprise, the new book by Schaaf, Biographies III, attributes this exact same deer to the very famous Bowman Paywa and depicts it. I\'ve included the Schaaf remarks and picture in the last picture above. Bowman Paywa is a rare Zuni master, whose work commands very high prices indeed. The quality of work on this deer is superb and I\'ve owned his pieces, so I do know his quality. This deer is consistent with the quality of Bowman Paywa\'s work. It is top quality.

In order to help solve this mystery, Ernie Bulow very kindly interviewed Bowman Paywa\'s son, Jim, who told him that this deer was indeed made by his parents back in the fifties.  Louise did the silverwork, Bowman did the silver. He was not only sure, he identified some characteristics which distinguish it as Bowman Paywa\'s work. He also said the starred drops that are clearly on this piece identify it as Bowman\'s.  And he said in addition that Bowman and Louise used a lot of jet in their pieces.  But, amazingly, one of Julalita\'s daughters said exactly the same thing about her mother\'s work.  Nevertheless, Julalita\'s raindrops were very different from the starred ones on this piece and that is a distinguishing characteristic making this one Bowman Paywa\'s and not Julalita Lamy\'s.

Julalita did use a different raindrop that is very distinctive, with parallel lines on it, sometimes referred to as a sea shell pattern, and that distinctive raindrop does not appear on this piece though it is visible on the one in Bell\'s page and appeared on the half dozen of her pieces I have owned in the past. On that basis I believe that Bowman Paywa made this one, not Julalita Lamy. Her distinctive raindrop is not on this deer.

There is a family relationship between the Paywa\'s and the Lamy\'s and we know now that both Bowman Paywa and Julalita Lamy made this same deer in the 1950s, based on Schaaf\'s source as well as Jim Paywa.  I do know this one is the best quality possible, and I do own other, smaller, ones which I never listed and a ring of hers which I just recently listed. This a real beauty and it\'s equivalent in quality to the Bowman Paywa pin I sold not long ago: superb! He was one of the great masters. I believe that the evidence falls to his having made this deer and to it also being a very rare example of this form by him, since he only made them in the 1950s It\'s a rare and splendid deer and the largest and most elaborate example I\'ve seen. On the basis of the raindrops and the quality of the work I feel confident now that it was made by Bowman Paywa.

Some of my pictures of the deer appear to show a defect in the mother of pearl of the tail but that is an artifact of lighting. There are no problems with the stones, which are breathtaking. The inlay is gorgeous with lovely old spondylus shell, mother of pearl, jet and turquoise. The design is distinctive and the hand carved and hand buffed stones are perfectly inlaid in mosaic inlay work into finely serrated bezel settings. The stamping is particularly spectacular on the raindrops and theres some hand twisted wire decoration. Even the chain on the tie bar pin has a bit of hand stamping on each hand made link and the tie bar has some classic engraving, too. It\'s all hand made except for that clip on the back of the tie bar, which has a nice tight spring to it, and works perfectly. I\'d prefer to wear it as a necklace and it\'s such an easy conversion, unless someone wants to use it as a clip-on, as it is.

The piece hangs about 3-3/8\" from top to bottom. The bar measures 2-3/8\" x 3/16\", the deer measures 1-1/4\" x 1-7/8\". The piece is unsigned by the artist, and Schaaf\'s book which claims that Bowman Paywa made it has been substantiated by Bowman\'s son, Jim, though it is historically a piece by Julalita and their granddaughter believes it is her work. I believe that the use of the starred raindrops with none of Julalita\'s typical raindrops, confirms it to be the work of Bowman Paywa. It is a museum quality piece in any case and a great treasure to own. There are scratched initials FITT on the back which would be those of a trader or former owner. The weight of the piece is 11 grams.

It\'s a joy to own this beautiful deer who is graceful and nimble. It\'s highly collectible, a large and superb example, and will provide generations of delight.
