Vera Luna was one of the all time great Zuni artists, whose work resides in numerous museums and galleries and she is mentioned in most of the books about Zuni jewelry. I\'ve owned many of her pieces, signed and unsigned and always love her work. This is a signed piece which is beautiful and charming. It is her prototypical form of the Kumanche Katsina dancer, also referred to as Comanche Kachina, a masked figure in the ceremonials and it\'s masterfully executed, exemplifying many techniques. There is flush detailed inlay and raised inlay, channel inlay, Dishta style raised inlay in the form of four flowers and mosaic inlay, and the stones are chosen for their excellence. There\'s rich abalone and pipestone or coral as well as clean, probably Sleeping Beauty Turquoise and jet. The more you look at the details of the inlay the more you\'ll appreciate it. Note the paper thin turquoise inlaid into the jet of the braids and that there are incisions in the braids for definition of the hair. Note, too, that the tips match the inlay. I must mention that the tips are the same as a design which was attributed to Dexter Cellicion in one of the Sei books, but there were a lot of mistakes in his books and he certainly didn\'t make this bolo. This piece is signed by Vera Luna with a signature I\'ve owned of hers several times before, stamped on a plate as was done in the 60s and 70s. This is absolutely Vera Luna\'s work. I had a similar piece of hers at one time, but it was not identical to this, and it was also signed by her with this same hallmark. Her work is always astonishingly gorgeous, though she mastered so many styles and each example is wonderful quality work. These pieces were made to honor the ceremonials and often were made for within tribe use so a piece like this might be worn by a Zuni to the ceremonials or to the pow wows.

This is a very large bolo and every aspect is superb. The bolo is 4-1/4\" high and 2-1/2\" wide. The tips are 3-1/2\" with the dangles. The dangles were made in a detailed inlaid form of Comanche dancer and 1-1/4\'H  X 1-1/8\"W. The entire piece weighs an exceptional 107.4 grams. Condition is excellent vintage and collectible. It is superb.

A smaller version of this exact piece is in the collection of the Kennedy Museum. Her work always won prizes and is in several top museums and galleries. Highly collectible and exceptional. It\'s worthy of the very best collections and has my top recommendation.

Attributions on many of the old pieces of Native American jewelry are sometimes a moving target. All the books have errors, so in addition to counterchecking, I have developed some expertise over the years and I do care about getting it right, so as more information comes to light I update my listings and also get in touch with my previous buyers, to inform them of any changes in attributions. I am sincerely committed to ongoing accuracy.

Everything I sell comes from my personal collection or is something that I would include in my personal collection. Most pieces are museum worthy and gallery suitable, sold to you at great pricing. I vet every item carefully for quality and condition, and offer you the best. I want you to be able to rely on me for top quality, superb items that are often unique and rare examples of old antique vintage southwest, indian, native american and fine gold and gemstones, whether you\'re starting a collection or adding to one, or want something great to wear or gift.
