Most of these figuralnapkin rings and toothpick holders were sourced in Australia. I havegathered them over the last 2 years from deceased estate sales allaround the country. Most of the American figural napkin rings were madec1860-1899, and I believe a lot of them found there way to Australia inthe gold-rush period in Australia in the 1870/1890\'s.I havelisted them nowasthey have accumulated over the last 2 years while I have been engagedin a big supreme court action.
In the previous 5 years I have been gathering these items for Americancollectors.This is a lovelyantiqueAmerican figural napkin ringc1880which has the holder sitting on a pedestal above the base with takesthe form of an artist\'s palette. There is also a bug on the base, notsure if fly or bee. the whole piece has a hammered arts and crafts lookto it. Thedetail is excellent. It is marked Meriden B Company 239.A similiar ring without the bug and flowers is shown in the book by Gottschalk and Whitson, \"Figural NapkinRings: Collectors Identification and Value Guide\" on page 255 in plate627. G&W valued that at $200-$350 in 1996, 18 years ago. Thisone has the flowers and bug also. They talk about the one with bug andflowers in their description having seen it in catalogues but notpossessing it. This figural napkin ring isin excellent condition.Ihave not polished it. Just washed it in warm soapy water. It is spottedthroughout with tanish but there is not silverplate loss, no pitting,no repairs and no damage or missing bits. I did not clean/wsh it toogood and there may still be some dirt on it.
