antique Athena Greek Owl Coin Silver 800 Italy watch Fob w chain vtg:
$49.99
An unusual antique or old vintage silver watch fob w partial chain – The main design in the center is what I presume must be an antique reproduction of an ancient Greek Athenian silver Owl Coin – the front is embossed and has a raised design, but the back of the coin has been polished so that it is concave. I cannot imagine that it is one from ancient Greece.
The circular frame for the coin is marked 800 in an oval. I am not an expert in silver markings, but from internet research, I believe this is an older vintage Italian silver markings. Please note, this piece has not been tested as to silver content. I do not have one of those kits. If silver experts know more about the mark, please do email me.
Size: the coin center is approx. 3/4ths inches in diameter. The circular frame is approx. 1 1/4th inch in diameter. The attached link chain is approx. 1 ½ inches long. The final length acts like a clasp – or it could be just disconnected.
I am rather perplexed by the piece. I have attempted internet research – Seems like quite a wonderful find.
Below is a bit of research I did not what I assume is a reproduction of the ancient Greek coin design:
Owls were the first widely used international coin. Used from around 490 B.C. to 267 A.D. All Owls feature an AQE ethnic on the reverse, an ethnic being a type of legend identifying a people. The AQE ethnic is sometimes written in English instead as AOE or A-TH-E. The three Greek letters are alpha, theta, and epsilon, with the theta appearing as an O with a dot in the middle and having a TH sound. (In modern Greek theta is represented as an O with a line in the middle, while earlier in Greece it was represented as an O with either a cross or X in the middle). As with most ancient Greek coins, the genitive (possessive) case was used for the legend, so instead of \"Athens\" it means \"Of the Athenians.\"
Condition:lovely aged patina. It has not been shined or polished. The engraved 800 marking on the back of the circular frame is still strong. Final length in chain either a connector or detached and final link on chain may show some tarnish.
