An antique 19C hand carved miniature French meerschaum Madonna holding sacred heart reliquary under glass dome mounted in an ornate wood frame. The carving is deep and sharp, skilled, she strikes a serene pose.
There is an old crack across the French meerschaum at about shoulder level. Another short border crack below that seen when in hand and tilted. Despite this flaw she is still quite lovely. French meerschaum is a plaster or clay like material, not techically meerschaum but often referred to it as such. A tiny bit of loss on 1 finger seen in the detail pics, not really seen by the naked eye - remember the detail pics are magnified.
Top and bottom of wood frame were pierced with a nail or metal brad, top nail remains. There is a crack at the bottom of frame through nail hole and some small cracks or crazing lines also. Some loss to beading detail around glass and to cross at top of frame. There is a short scratch on glass with some embedded dirt /dust I think, I have not cleaned this piece in any way and leave that to the new owner if desired.
Measures approx. 5-1/2\" x 3\" overall, domed oval approx. 2-1/4\" x almost 1-3/4\".
There may have been an attempt a very long time ago to repair the crack on Madonna, I can\'t really tell for certain.
