Description:

A supremely decorative and originalantiqueGeorgian period (King George III) Old Sheffield Fused Plate chamberstick with original snuffer and removable sconce, dating to thelate 18th Century (c. 1790-1800).

The chamberstick is of very heavy double thickness fused silver plate, with design features typical of the time: scalloped and cast floral rim with gadrooned edging, shield shaped thumbpiece with original snuffer attached, and floral shaped original sconce.

The base of the stick bears the makers mark for ER, along with other stamped marks which appear to be a keyhole, a hammer and a recumbent deer.

Background:

Sheffield plate properly describes a process of fusing silver and copper, discovered in 1742 by Thomas Boulsover. It was used in the manufacture of many domestic articles from the 1750s tothe 1850s. By 1770, the process had been developed to provide double fused plate, of which this is a fine example. This enabled sheets of fused plate to be used to produce articles where both inner and outer surfaces would show as silver.

Condition:

In very good antique condition, with no wear to the silver plate, only some light surface scratches especially to the underside. Some minor pitting is visible, and a thin split to the silver plate on the underside. Please see the images provided which complement this description.
