Description:

An antique early 19th Century Sheffield Plate, silver on copper tea caddy of rectangular form with shaped ends, each with a lion mask and loop handle. The stepped hinged lid has a ball finial and gadrooned edge detail matched on the lower rim.

The front is engraved with a crown crest and the initials MMC. Itis lockable and is supplied with an associated key.

Sheffield plate properly describes a process of fusing silver and copper, discovered in 1742 by Thomas Boulsover. It was used in the manufacture of many domestic articles from the 1750s tothe 1850s. By 1770, the process had been developed to provide double fused plate, of which this is a fine example. This enabled sheets of fused plate to be used to produce articles such as sauce boats and entree dishes where both inner and outer surfaces would show as silver. The inner dishes of such serving sets, less often seen, were more likely to be tinned, providing a more practical steely grey matt finish. In this case the inner dishes are plated on the upper side and tinned under.

Condition:

In good antique condition, with expected wear to the silver plate commensurate with age and use. Internally clean and the lid closes firmly. The lock works with its replacementkey, but is a little stiff. Please see the images provided which complement this description.
