c1862 Civil War Used by Captain Lucius Richmond 1st Mass Cavalry Playing Cards

Historic ORIGINAL c1862 Civil War Antique Poker Playing Cards Owned by Captain Lucius Richmond & used during the Civil war.

Brief History

The 1st Regiment, Massachusetts Cavalry (section) was organized at Camp Brigham, Reedville, and duty there till December 25, 1861, mustered out June 29, 1865, and discharged at Readville, Mass., July 24, 1865.

Regimental history from Massachusetts Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines in the Civil War, compiled and published by the Adjutant General:

The genesis of the 1st Regt. Mass. Vol. Cav. is found in Special Order No. 419, dated Sept. 3, 1861, in which Marcus A. Moore, Lucius Richmond, and others were authorized to raise squadrons of cavalry.

As fast as the companies were raised they were forwarded to Camp Brigham, Readville, Mass., and were there organized into a regiment of twelve companies. The men were mustered in on various dates mostly from Sept. 12 to Oct. 31, 1861.

Colonel Robert Williams of Virginia, an old Regular Army officer, was appointed to command the regiment. It was organized into three battalions of four companies each, commanded respectively by Majors Greely S. Curtis, John H. Edson, and William F. White.

In between combat, marching, mess, drill, and sleep, Civil War soldiers had plenty of idle time to fill. They would occupy their time with leisure activities such as singing, writing letters, attending religious services, and playing games.

“[The] American Card Company was operated by Benjamin W. Hitchcock, owner of a music and publishing business at 14 Chambers street NY.

The business consisted of sheet music, books, musical instruments, printing presses, and type.

The time frame that Hitchcock printed playing cards is questionable, but assumed to be between 1862 and 1864 based upon their boxes and dates found on tax stamps. The ace of eagles clearly states that the American Card Company had offices at 14 Chambers St. and 165 William St. in New York City.

“Three versions of the Union Cards were made especially for Americans. This was conveyed through the following message on the Union Cards box, ‘THE AMERICAN CARD CO. Confident that the introduction of NATIONAL EMBLEMS in place of Foreign, in PLAYING CARDS, will be hailed with delight by the American People, take pleasure in presenting the UNION PLAYING CARDS.

As the first and only Genuine American Cards ever produced, in the fullest confidence that the time is not far distant when they will be the leading Card in American market.

Explanation printed on Box:

The Union Cards are calculated to play all the Games for which the old style of Playing Cards are used. The suits are EAGLES, SHIELDS, STARS, and FlagS, GODDESS OF LIBERTY in place of Queen, COLONEL for King, MAJOR for Jack. In playing with these Cards, they are to be called by the names the emblems represent, and as the Emblems are as familiar as household words, everywhere among the American people, they can be used as readily the first occasion as Cards bearing Foreign emblems.”

Collecting playing cards can be a very rewarding hobby. There is the excitement of the hunt for new decks, whether through collectors\' meetings, internet sales or at shows and flea markets where every new table may unfold the unexpected treasure. Even better, there is the enjoyment of fellow collectors, some of the most interesting people in the world!

Playing cards have been around a thousand years or more and are infinite in their variety. This makes individual playing cards and complete decks rich in history and every bit as collectible as coins and postage stamps. The Price Guide for Collectible Playing Cards is intended to be a basic resource for collectors of playing cards and decks of playing cards and to give at least some idea of what different decks of cards may be worth among other collectors.

Some advice for both buyers and sellers. “advice to buyers .... if you see a deck that you really want for your collection and you have an opportunity to buy it, and the price seems higher than the listed value, remember you may never find another .... and if you do, it will probably be for more. Even if you overpay slightly, it will not be long before the value will surpass the purchase price.

The demand for old and rare playing cards far exceeds the supply, and we have all experienced regret, on occasion, for not paying the additional dollars necessary to purchase a scarce deck that we have not had another chance to buy.

The prices of standard decks are more difficult to estimate than those established for popular categories such as transformation and insert cards, souvenir and railway cards and advertising decks. Non-standard decks usually have beautiful and/or interesting courts, can be of historical significance and often appeal to more than one group of collectors.

A final point. We believe that values for good decks will only rise. Scarce items only become scarcer, and as more people realize the joy of collecting playing cards and become serious collectors, the demand for old and scarce decks, especially ones in excellent or better condition, will continue to grow and drive prices upward!
