c1900-1925 Handsome Pair Samson Chinese Imari Style Foo Dog Covered Urns / Vases

Presented is a handsome pair of Samson porcelain covered vases or urns. These urns date to the first quarter of the 1900s. The urns are done in the style of Chinese export porcelain, with traditional floral designs in the classic Imari palette of rich cobalt blues, iron reds, and gilding. The bodies of the vases are done in an attractive octagonal paneled form, very stately and impressive to look at. The lids have foo dog or lion form finials, beautifully detailed and eye-catching in their deep blue and gold coloring. Each vase has a painted armorial crest, of a lion and horse rampant supporting a shield with six daggers beneath a Ducal crown, with a motto banner beneath. The motto reads \"Sola Virtus Invicta\" in Latin, which translates to \"Virtue alone is unconquered.\" This crest and motto belong to the Howard family name, and were incorporated into the crest of the Dukes of Norfolk when that title was passed along through a noble Howard family in England.

The undersides are signed with the red pseudo-Chinese style marks used by Samson for their Chinese export style pieces.

The urns are in good overall condition. The bodies of the urns have no chips, no cracks, no breaks, and no repairs, though there is some flaking to the blue paint on the banners. One of the lids has a repair to its rim, which we have pointed out in a photo. The other lid\'s foo dog finial is missing the tip of its tail, and the end of the tail has been gilded to camouFlage the break.

Each urn is about 15 3/4 inches tall.
