YOU ARE offerDING ON a ca. 1880s small Russian Orthodox hand-painted icon depicting Miraculous Appearance of the Mother of God and St. Nicholas to Cleric George.

Known as a \"Conversation icon of the Mother of God\" this icon is depicting the Virgin Mary and St Nicholas having a conversation with cleric George with a church building visible in the background. Traditionally this encounter took place in 1383 in Tikhvin region where a cleric was sent to nearby villages to tell them about completion of a church and erection of a cross on its steeple. On his way, he encountered the Virgin Mary and St. Nicholas who told him that he should return and ask the church builder to replace a metal cross to a different one made of wood because \"Our Savior was crucified on a wooden cross.\" At first, people did not believe him, but when during erection of a metal cross a sign of miracle proved his words, a metal cross was replaced with a wooden one. This icon is an example of availability of the Virgin every mortal man, if he is sincere in his prayer. At first, the story about the appearance of the Mother of God was placed on vignettes of Our Lady of Tikhvin icon, but from the XVII century began to be depicted as a separate icon, receiving name \"The Appearance of the Virgin Mary and St. Nicholas to Cleric George\".
