ca1860s HOLD-TO-LIGHT TISSUE Stereoview Photo DIABLERIES / DEVILS & SKELETONS #1:
$31.00

Wonderful, ca. 1860\'s - early 1900\'s, hand colored, French Tissue / Hold to Light Stereoview from one of the Diableries series depicting a sculpted diorama containing figures of the Devil and Skeletons (sometimes called “Diablo Stereos”).

This image is titled “Un Banquet Infernal” (“An Infernal Banquet”), number 19 in the series. It depicts an interesting scene with red eyed skeletons dining at a lavish banquet table. There are two young women being wined and dined by the Devil and his crew. The view is mounted in its original, embossed, yellow paper board mount which measures 7\" x 3-1/2\". It is embossed with J.M., Hotographie, Paris at the bottom, (Jules Marinier).

From the web: These fun stereoviews were made exclusively in France, beginning in the 1860s, and continuing on until around 1900. The cards, called \'Diableries\' (which translates roughly as \'Devilments\') depict a whole imaginary underworld, populated by devils, satyrs and skeletons which are very much alive and, for the most part, having fun. The cards are works of art in themselves, and are known as FRENCH TISSUES, constructed in a special way to enable them to be viewed (in a stereoscope) illuminated from the front, for a normal \'day\' appearance in monochrome, or illuminated from the back, transforming the view into a \'night\' scene, in which hidden colours magically appear, and the eyes of the skeletons leap out in red, in a most macabre way

The images are in good but not perfect antique condition. The image on the right has a tear at the base and one at the top right side, see images. The quality of the image is nice and crisp. The yellow mounting board has age related soiling. Still looks fantastic through a viewer. Please take a close look at the photos as they describe condition and details best.
