Exceptionally rare, beautiful Large Size ca1864 Mary Todd Lincoln, Ferrotype / Tintype Portrait from the original Mathew Brady Photograph and likely published at the time of the 1864 Presidential Election. This Tintype Image is mounted in its original, 1/2 plate size pressed brass publisher\'s / photographer\'s frame with its original paper mat and original backing paper.


This outstanding Mrs. Abraham Lincoln tintype portrait measures approx. 2 3/4\" by 4” and is mounted in its original display that measures approx. 4 1/4” by 5”. The Photograph was published by William Grace & Company of Portland, Maine and retains its original matt, original pressed brass binding / frame and original printed back paper identifying the photographer / publisher. The Photograph itself is a heavily retouched, mirror image of a portrait of Mrs Lincoln taken at the studio of Mathew Brady in 1864.


We have been unable to find any references to this Image which was commercially published and distributed by William Grace & Co. Text on the back paper reads \"From Wm. Grace & Co. / 181 Middle St., Portland, Me. / Agents Wanted\". The original matt surrounding the Tintype features printed text below the Image that reads simply \"Mrs. A. Lincoln\". This wonderful and exceptionally rare Tintype Photograph came to us with a matching Tintype Portrait of Abraham Lincoln issued by the same photographer / publisher which we are also offering for sale this week on .


We have been unable to uncover any other examples of this wonderful Mary Todd Lincoln Tintype Portrait - no sale records and no examples in ANY Library or Museum collection. Any information that would shed further light on this outstanding and important Mary Lincoln Tintype Portrait Photograph would be greatly appreciated.


This exceptionally rare and important Mary Todd Lincoln Ferrotype / Tintype Portrait is in very good, original condition exhibiting razor sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. The Tintype has some surface crazing but the image is stable. The matt, brass binding and paper backing are all exceptionally well preserved and the Image retains its original seal. The Tintype retains a bright and vibrant surface sheen.


This wonderful and exceptionally rare Mrs. Abraham Lincoln Tintype Photograph came to us with a matching Tintype Portrait of President Abraham Lincoln issued by the same photographer / publisher which we are also offering for sale in this week\'s sale so be sure to check out this seller\'s other sales. It appears that these Tintypes may have been issued by William Grace & Company in 1864 as part of a series of large format Tintype Portraits of important Political / Historical Personalities similar to the series of Gem Sized Tintype Images issued by Abbott & Company. The fact that no other examples of these large size Tintypes could be located suggests that they are of exceptional rarity however!
