The animation is great and colorful for the time. The story is dated but still classic, engaging and the characters are very entertaining. The action is very well animated and the Hayao Miyazaki finale is fantastic to watch. The songs are really lighthearted and catchy. The film is just an entertaining watch and also very interesting to see how far Japanese animation has come.

This is one of my all time favorite childhood movies. My sibling love this movie, age range from 28-11 yrs (self included) and including my 10 yr old daughter. Granted the animation & story is a bit cheesy, BUT keep in mind that this is a film from 1969 Japan! If you are looking for a film with high definition and dolby digital, this is NOT for you, but if you looking for something that is vintage & "orgnanic" then give it a try. As far as the previous comment about not being "child friendly", honestly, people from our generation (Gen X) used to watch a heck of lot worse and more "cartoon violence", ala Looney Tunes, and we turn out just fine :) AS A DIE HARD ANIME FAN, I HAVE TO DEFEND THIS FILM!!!!
Rare gem of classic Japanese animation from 1969. If the main character of Pero looks familiar to anime-heads, it's because he's also the cat from the Toei logo! Legendary animation master Hayao Miyazaki also contributed to this film. I wish I could have seen it in projected a darkened theater back in the day. Magical!
