Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam It is now seven years since the end of the One Year War. It is the Year 0087 of the Universal Century. After the Earth Federation triumphed over the Republic of Zeon in the One Year War and brought an end to the conflict between the people living on Earth and the people living in the space colonies the Federation instituted a government for the prosperity of all mankind. For seven years now the two communities have coexisted but, with an unsteady peace as fear and mistrust of the other side still lingers among their citizens. To guard against the remnants of the Zeon military the Earth Federation had created a special task force known as the Titans. The Titans however, have their own agenda. Ruthless in their military campaigns the corrupt Titans serve out their own brutal forms of justice. And now, after some success they seek to take control over the Earth Federation’s government from within and assume a military dictatorship. With five newly developed Gundams at their use the Titans become even more dangerous. As this corruption of the government becomes publicly recognized it is met with resistance as former members of the Earth Federation, the Zeon and civilians alike resolve to form their own anti-military organization, the AUEG: Anti United Earth Government. Determined in their mission to prevent the Titans military conquest the AUEG develops an operation to sabotage the Titans weaponry. By chance civilian student Camille Bidan wanders into the fight. Having previously suffered insults and injuries from members of the Titans the angry and rebellious youth in retaliation of his treatment assists the AUEG in there operation and steals one the Titan’s Mark II Gundams. Eager to retrieve the stolen Gundams the Titans pursue and bait the fleeing AUEG. In an offer of exchange the Titans agree to the release of one of their hostages for the return of the stolen Gundam’s and the renegade youth Camille. The hostage is Camille’s own mother. After the exchange is botched and she is murdered by the Titans Camille vows his allegiance to the AUEG and his personal war against this tyranny begins. Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam brings aspiring pilot Camille Bidan together with veteran mobile suit pilots of the One Year War as the AUEG sets out to find new recruits. This sequel sees the return of the previous war’s greatest adversaries Amuro Rei and Char Aznoble but, now both fighting for the AUEG their rivalry is replaced with support and cooperation . For each of these soldiers the events of this war are life changing. Camille under the careful guidance of the veteran pilots attempts to traverse the distance of his turbulent youth to become a tolerant and disciplined adult. For Char he lives in disguise under a new identity as he tries to make a new life for himself and forget his previous legacy as he was once known as Zeon’s ace pilot. For Amuro it is his attempt to find the confidence in himself to fight again and to free himself from the emotionally crippling effects of the previous war. For each of them war is the carrier of loss and tragedy. Can this small band of rebels known as the AUEG win back for it’s people the freedoms they lost to the Titans? For each of these soldiers they will know war is fought at the cost of personal sacrifice. Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: You will know the tears of time.Read full review
So "Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam," is re-released in five two disc sets. This time, the subtitles are improved. Unlike some other anime DVDs, the title menu allows you to select an episode, and watch it without the fuss of going through a sub menu. So the story goes: In 0085, five years after the fall of Zeon in the original series, the elite Titans abuses their power and subjugates the colonies and the Earth Federation government to their will. Rebels, known as the Anti Earth Union Group (AEUG), stands tall against their tyranny. Kamille Bidan, our hero, is caught up in the conflict and pilots a Gundam MK II to help the rebels. He is not alone, as the mysterious ace pilot Quattro Bajeena is there to help him. Can the AEUG defeat the Titans and bring out peace throughout the Earth Sphere?
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam is the second show in UC Gundam time line, and it is one of the very best. My personal favorite is still Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team, but this show is a close second. I'm probably in a minority amongst gundam fans in that i despised Amuro Ray from the original Gundam 0079. Amuro only plays a small part in Zeta and the new lead Kamille, though sharing in a few of Amuro's bad habits, is a very different character. He becomes a much more rounded character and is not simply a god like protagonist, though his survival early on in the show is quite amazing considering his rash decision making. Even if you didn't like 0079 I still think you will probably like Zeta as it has a much different tone with better developed characters. As for the dvd set itself, its barebones. You get the episodes and thats it, but thats just fine. This is the second relese of the show in the states, the first being a large collector's thinpack set. It came with a good bit of omake, but was very expensive and now is pretty hard to find. This set is superior in that the bad dubtitles of the original release have been changed over to more accurate subtitles. The only thing that might deter you from buying this release (ten dvds spread over five two disc sets) is the fact that bandai is now releasing the show again in two brick sets under their anime legends line. These sets will simply rebox the discs from this release so either is fine, but if you can find these sets on the cheap their more than good enough. Zeta Gundam is a great show that finally got the U.S release that it long deserved.Read full review
Gundam zeta was gundam. Before gundam wing mobile report. Less dramatic at times. After gundam original. The suit was made black. Still it was more about in space. The main character an athlete. Instead of an academic. Char returns a slick punk. Was good but still not as technical as others.
