An excellent and balanced children's story. 👍 This was one of my favourites of my own youth during the 90s. I recommend this hardback edition with lovely cover art and good sized font. The illustrations are simple and charming. This book has a lot of funny and heartwarming moments. It's also thoughtful and philosophical if you can read between the lines. I was happy to confirm that the author spent some of his life as a farmer and this is reflected in his pondering of farm life and compassion for the animals that live there. You can tell he struggled with some of the more brutal aspects of nature and relationship between predator + prey species. What it means to raise an animal? What is love and friendship? Can we both love and eat the same animal? He brings up the parallel of humans both hunting rabbits for food or sport, but also keeping them as companions. The complex relationship we can have with these beings. It's a thoughtful book. I was impressed by how it manages to be funny, lighthearted - but still raise some interesting questions. Those aren't resolved in the end and I like how it's left up to the reader to take the ideas or leave it. Heartwarming 5/5Read full review
