I read history to learn how successful people make decisions. This is an excellent look inside the mind of a very successful submarine commander. He explains his reasoning and views that contributed to one of the best scoring submarine totals of WWII. The action is non-stop, and this book is very well written. The part about rescuing POW's from the ocean while facing a Typhoon will alternately have you laughing and crying. The willingness to trade "harm for harm" is the essence of the submarine service's courage, and is the reason we were able to smash the Japanese war machine as fast as we did. Some of the submarine losses during WWII are seen in this book, from the fresh perspective of the men in that rare group that the lost crewmen would call friends. The physical problems, combined with the courage that was a daily occurrence, give a real feel of life on a fighting ship! This one is worth reading, and re-reading. I highly recommend this book.Read full review
The Captain and crew did incredible things fighting their sub. There are no greater Americans than these men. Thank you to them.
