This year (2017) is the 500 th anniversary of the beginning of Martin Luther's work, so this is a good time to view this classic black & white film. Produced in late 1953 and released for viewing in commercial theaters as well as in churches and schools, it received two Academy Award nominations in 1954, including Best (B&W) Cinematography and Best (B&W) Art Direction. Basically, the movie is historically accurate regarding the characters it portrays and the events it includes. The various actors and actresses in the film accurately and appropriately represent the historical characters they play. Niall MacGinnis is superb as Martin Luther. Although the film is old, it is absolutely the best one on Martin Luther's life and work. The viewer must overlook the fact that while all the dialogue is in English (with language subtitles in some editions), originally German and Latin were the languages used by the characters portrayed in the film. At its best, this particular movie can be both entertaining and informative to the viewer, as well as intellectually and spiritually challenging. Personally, I have watched this movie nearly every year for over sixty years, and I have always seen and heard something very interesting and stimulating in it. I expect that most viewers will benefit from it. Read full review

In the 500th anniversary year of he Reformation I wanted to watch the "older" version of Luther Movie. Found this one and ordered it. I appreciate the story telling and even a slightly different angle of the story from the "new" version. I know that movies can tell a story, although limited, but i feel this one does a very good job. What a fascinating man and a true gift from God.

This is the second copy I have ordered of the 50 th anniversary of the black and white DVD. The first one came with a insert where you could order courses for teaching Sunday school. I lost the insert and ordered a brand new copy. It came sealed in plastic wrap but no insert.

I have recently gone through an information class at Grace Lutheran and portions of this dvd had been used to explain how we Lutherans came to be one of the largest Christian Church's. I was very intrigued and wanted to see the whole movie. Though the movie was done many years ago it was still well written...Niall MacGinnis plays the part of Luther with such force of being that it makes you want to learn even more about the man Martin Luther.
