Excellent, heart-warming story! Once I got past the geographical description of the Middle East and the Military terminology abbreviations, I was hooked! Literally, I was on the edge of my seat! Jay Kopelman and Melinda Roth present on paper a fast-moving and exciting event in a way that the reader feels as if he/she are actually in the middle of it all! A real page-turner to find out what happens next! So many details that the average citizen isn't even aware of for our Troops bravely fighting to protect us are spelled out in clear and concise language that make the reader forget about hatred, anger, and any other negative emotion. Both authors have carefully chronicled the harsh reality of the war but do so in the most tender way, not because this book is about saving a puppy, but because of the human cooperation, compassion, and understanding on both sides of the division lines. Many lives and careers were jeopardized to help another human help save a life. This would be a great movie! I can't wait to see it at the box office! Animal Planet definitely needs to pick up on this one! Better yet, Tri-Star Pictures, so it can be seen by thousands at the box office! If you haven't read this yet, DO IT NOW!Read full review
I bought the book because I love dogs and my son is a marine who served in Iraq and told me about all the stray dogs and how many of the guys 'adopted' them while in country. It is a wonderful story that will pull at your heart even though you know the ending. It shows the love and compassion even the 'toughest' of the tough, a marine, can have for a stray helpless dog. With all the negative press our military is getting, this shows the other side of the picture. It took a lot of big hearted Americans who went out of their way to help this Lt.Colonel bring his 'buddy' home. I found myself flipping to the pictures while reading the book and saying to myself 'boy, you are one lucky dog'. Colonel, if by chance you read this, you are one lucky guy to have Lava. Any one who loves dogs and wants to see how we Americans really are, even in combat, please read this book. I agree with the colonel - at least you did 'save something'. Thanks Colonel, for a great story!Read full review
I bought this book primarily because I love dogs and secondly because I was interested in reading something about the marines in Baghdad. The author did a fantastic job bringing these 2 topics together and describing the conditions that they have to deal with in Baghdad were somehow softened by caring for a small helpless puppy and what they had to go through to get this puppy back to the U.S. By caring for this puppy (which is against the rules for marines) it helped them take the focus off the killing and tension that goes with war. Being writen by an author who had just experienced all that went into the book made it all the better. The book was written in easy to read format which made it even harder to put down. I highly recommend this book!
This was a book I saw at a book store laying next to "Marley and Me" which I'd also read and being a former military brat, this book caught my interest. I had to have it!! I highly recommend this book not only for the happy ending but also the additional insight from a soldier's point of view on things that are really occurring in the Iraq/Baghdad areas. In all honesty, my only complaint was the duration it took to receive the book. Three weeks seems exceptionally long to wait for something these days, even if it's via snail mail. Otherwise, the book itself was well worth reading and something I'd highly recommend. It's now been passed to my parents to read!
I am a animal lover and fight for animal rights. A job so easy to bring a dog from Bagdad to America seemed to simple. The road-blocks continued at every turn, but they never gave up. It is a heart warming story of unconditional love and proves animals can make our life more enriched and are beneficial to our mental state. I highly recommend to "quick read" to everyone.
