Maybe I'm a biography freak, but it's interesting to find that many public figures are prone to the same human failures as us "mortals." Kelley's picture of the former first lady is far from flattering. Yet, without Nancy's drive and determination, it's doubtful that Ronald Reagan would have run for president or emerged as a hero for many Americans. She was (for better or worse) the power behind the throne. Only a kind and patient man like Ronald Reagan would likely find marital bliss with such a hard-nosed, judgemental,cold-hearted narcisistic, woman like Nancy Reagan. The book traces the dysfunctional Reagan family, the rise to the governor's mansion, and Nancy's pushing her husband into national politics. You explore the early movie and TV careers of the President and Mrs Reagan and learn that Nancy put her sights on "Ronnie" almost from the beginning. Both had their dalliances, and the White House wasn't off-limits. If you lived through the Reagan years in the White House, you could only scratch the surface of Nancy's strong influence and management style. It was largely hidden by her scrambling staff as they struggled to keep the press away from the First Lady as much as possible. You'll be startled by Nancy's cold and queen-like demeanor, and selfish attitude even toward those who were ardent Reagan supporters and long term "friends." I'd recommend this book only to those who have a keen interest in the Reagan years and who have a strong desire to discover what went on behind the scenes during Queen Nancy's reign in Sacramento and Washington.Read full review
