Whatever you may think about our entry into Iraq, you can learn a valuable history lesson by reading this book. It is so easy to think that everything that has happened within the past fifty years has never happened before. After all, we weren't there, were we? Well of course that's one reason to take history seriously before trying to evaluate today's events. In this particular instance, reading how FDR lied, manipulated an often willing press, and used any number of underhanded tricks to follow his vision of a New World Order is nearly breathtaking. And reading this author's "The Illusion of Victory" about World War I and Woodrow Wilson is equally enlightening. Although he describes astonishing acts of skullduggery, he maintains an even-handed approach and documents every fact with comprehensive footnotes. He never preaches. You've probably seen the author on the History Channel; I know I have numerous times. Put aside for a moment any prejudice you may have for or against the New Deal, as well as your convictions regarding our entry into World War II, and read with fascination how this icon of modern history - FDR - went about steering the course of American policy during his four terms. You might be in for a surprise or two. If you know very little - or even a lot - about 1932-1945, this is a "must" read for a fresh perspective on those years.Read full review
