First off, before I get to the movies themselves, I must comment on something that normally matters very little to me: packaging and presentation. In this case, there are particularities both good and bad. First off, the skull container looks great and is more compact than one would envision. However, the way the discs sit inside is suspsect at best;the hard plastic of the skull is shaped into grooves that hold the discs standinging up. This wouldn't be an issue if only there was some sort of padding to keep them from rattling around. In the end, it's very easy to scuff the edges of the discs before even opening it up. Also, there are no inlays or disc cards whatsoever. The discs themselves bear some good looking artwork that belies the fact that these all come from the same series, with the inexplicable exception of the four movies contained on a pair of two-sided discs. These four kind of ruin the presentation. Anyhow, on to the real reason I got this set: the movies. I'd seen enough MoH on TV to know that I could count on this series to deliver, and for the most part it did just that. The two or three mediocre entries are far from enough to spoil the rest of the set, which offers a nice blend of creepiness and special effects (i.e. blood and guts). All of these are at least an hour long, and one is a feature-length J-horror piece. In the end, the overall material is extremely watchable and well worth whatever shortcomings one might find elsewhere. Bonus easter egg for horror buffs: Jeffrey Combs as Edgar Allen Poe. Sweet! THE HITS: Dream Cruise 8/10 Pelts 8/10 Family 9/10 The Washingtonians 9/10 The Screwfly Solution 9.5/10 THE MISSES: Sounds Like 3/10 We All Scream For Ice Cream 4/10 The Damned Thing 5.5/10 WORTH A LOOK: Pro-Life 7/10 Valerie on the Stairs 7/10 Right To Die 6.5/10 The Black Cat (based on the Poe story) 7.5/10 I recommend this set (and the entire series) to pretty much any jaded horror fan who thinks gore-porn killed fright flicks.Read full review
