I have read many books and articles regarding Dr. Martin Luther. Roland Bainton's "Here I Stand, a Life of Martin Luther is the single finest work I have studied. I would readily agree with the New York Times review that this work is "Excellent...illuminating and eloquent." It is also a well written, well researched and scholarly work. For anyone interested in acquiring an interesting and thorough knowledge of Luther, this work will meet his or her needs. Content-wise it begins with Luther's birth, his childhood, early education, motivation for becoming a monk, his advanced education, his disagreements with Catholic theology and practices (especially their practice of selling indulgences), his motivation for posting his 95 thesis and, to me, most important his work and writings following his posting of the thesis. It was good to read that Bainton reflected much of Luther's nature, attitudes and points of disagreement in this work. I especially commend his use of significant quotations and passages from Luther's works to support his biography. Again, as one who has spent much time and energy studying Dr. Martin Luther I commend this work as, perhaps, the most useful and interesting of the many works on Luther which I have read.Read full review
