At 11 lbs, this is a truly portable sewing machine, and the solid case makes transport safe. While fabulous for piecing quilts, it also is excellent for making clothing, sewing denim and lightweight chiffon equally well (with the correct needles of course!). Singer made something like 750,000 of these since they were first shown at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair, and with basic care, most have survived to continue making a perfect straight and reverse stitch. With available attachments (some included with machine and others an additional purchase). other functions such as a zig-zag stitch and making buttonholes, can also be accomplished. I recommend looking for a machine that reflects good care or else plan on spending extra for cleaning, servicing and any needed repairs. While not offering all the bells and whistles of many of today's plastic models, for many sewers the Featherweight will not only meet your needs, but will continue to run well without trips to the service center to keep all those fancy options functioning. And for anyone travelling back and forth to sewing classes this is a delight.Read full review
