These royalty free UK box sets are a risky proposition, as reviews of the '8 Classic Albums Series' have been mixed at best. The Count Basie Box Set has no needle drops. The sound quality is very acceptable, even on the mono 'The Atomic Basie.' I'm no audiophile expert, I just know what is pleasing to the ear, and what isn't. The 'In Person' album with Tony Bennett (which isn't 'live' by the way), finds the singer, as well as the band, drenched in reverb. But, checking some audio clips on the original release, found the same reverb. So far, it sounds like a good deal for $11, huh? Well, here is where purists might balk at the purchase of this box set. My Windows Media display of the track listing on Disc One was all wrong. A song was dropped from 'Chairman Of The Board' on Disc 2, probably to be able to fit 2 albums on 1 cd. The Joe Williams album on Disc 4, is missing 4 songs from the original version! The order of the songs has been completely altered from the original version. So, bottom line, if you want an inexpensive, but 'inaccurate' representation of these 8 Classic Albums, go for it! If, however, you are a purist and a audiophile fanatic, it might be best to hunt these albums down seperately on their original label release. All in all - 4 Stars for sound reproduction. 2 Stars for shoddy packagaing & incomplete albums.Read full review
I'm assuming the price is so low due to the lack of liner note information...this information was easy enough to find on line BUT it sure would be nice to have in print with the discs.
