What's not to love about a V.I. Warshawski novel wherein an item bought on eBay breaks the case wide open? In fact, what's not to love about a V.I. Warshawski novel, period? There's a reason author Sara Paretsky is a Mystery Writers of America Grand Master and winner of the the British Crime Writers Association's Cartier Diamond Dagger Award...and her name is V.I. Warshawski. Chicago's smart -- and smart-mouthed -- answer to Robert B. Parker's Boston-based Spenser is older and wiser now than she was when she arrived upon the mystery scene in 1982, yet she's also tougher than ever. Over the years she's been shot, stabbed, beaten up, drugged, and poisoned, but it's only made her harder to kill. V.I,, her cousin Petra, Mr. Contreras, Lotty and Max, Murray, and even Sal at the Golden Glow are in rare form this time around. The storyline revolves around a murdered private eye, a book club whose tween membership is hooked on a "Twilight"-like series about a shape-shifting teenager, and what V.I.'s brilliant but batty law-school buddy learned in the locked ward at her mental hospital.Throw in a controversial ultra-conservative talk-show host, a contentious senate race, and the world's 21st richest man, and you've got all the ingredients for "Breakdown"'s delicious stew of plot, counterplot, and subplot, which comes to a boil with a hair-raising climax, then simmers down to a most satisfying denouement. Another great book by Sara Paretsky. Love this author. I have read all of this series and loved them all. Purchased majority of them from e-bay.
