This is good Camper Van Beethoven, but it's not like their best, which is "Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart". While the music is different than most albums from the late 80s, it is not as groundbreaking as "Sweetheart". More of the same, and a few more covers, too. The cover of "Pictures of Matchstick Men" is rowdy and fun, and "When I Win the Lottery" is funny and biting satire at the same time. In typical Camper fashion, many of the songs are loud, and David Lowery's howling vocals add to the mix. There's quite a few arrangements with strings here, which make the music more complex than your average album. A good one, but get "Sweetheart" if you want to add one Camper Van Beethoven album to your collection.
I am 33 years old and was a huge fan of this album when I was in high school. Of course, it's so easy to lose things over the years and unfortunately, this cd was one of those things. When I would remember I would search for it in record stores, but never found it. Then one day I was on eBay just looking around when the song "Matchstick Men" popped in my head and I figured I best look it up while it was fresh on my mind. So I typed in the name of the band and there it was! The album I've been looking for for so many years was right in front of me! It's simply a great album, at least to my ears it is & I was overwhelmed when I found it again. So thanks eBay, once again for all that you are!
