House of Wax is the first color 3D film released by a major American film company. Unlike many 3D films of the era, the film was not shot in anaglyph (Red/Blue), but in a format that utilized polarized glasses – a technique similar to the Real3D films that have been recently released. A remake of the classic 1933 film Mystery of the Wax Museum, the film stars the inimitable Vincent Price as wax museum curator Henry Jerrod, who opened a wax museum in 1890s New York. His business partner Burke wishes to cash out of the museum in order to pursue another business venture (and a ditzy girlfriend), when Jerrod is unable to raise the funds to buy out his partner Burke sets fire to the museum in order to collect the insurance money. Jerrod is severely injured in the fire, but reappears to open a new museum a few years later. Of course, one of the main attractions of this film is the 3D format. This is among the best 3D films available on blu-ray. Many 3D films available have been converted from 2D to 3D, and appear much like a ViewMaster 3D – somewhat flat. The 3D effects in this film are excellent. And, of course there are a few jump-out-into-the-audience effects such as the paddle-ball pitchman, and the Can Can girls. The film was selected by the Library of Congress for the National Film Registry.Read full review

i think the 3d effects look great in this movie for the age of the film. i enjoyed the movie as well. the movie has a man in it who makes unique characters from history out of wax. the person who owns the warehouse along with the wax figure maker decides to maybe sale the place to another man who is interested in the wax makers work.the possible comes over to check out the wax figures and is presented with the idea of buying the place. the potential buyer is leaving out of country and cannot purchase the place til he gets back from a 3 month affair. the current owner has a quick deal he wants to make elsewhere and cannot wait the three months. the current owner decides to torch the place and share the insurance money with the wax maker.the wax maker does not want to lose his current wax figures in the warehouse. the owner torches the place anyways. a fight ensues as the place goes up in flames. the two men escape with their live although no one see the wax maker leave alive,he is presumed dead. years later they find out the wax maker is alive and wheelchair bound. in his new wax figure museum the wax maker has twp assistants make the figures. the twist is that now the wax maker is having figures that look like murder or suicide victims from the local newspaper. the new wax figures have a strong similarity to the actual dead people. could it be the exact sane dead people???? check it out and see.Read full review
House of Wax is considered one of the very best movies to be filmed and shown in 3D back in the early 1950s.... the bluray release is very well done, with plenty of extra features for fans of these movies.....this is great classic horror from the 50s , when movie producers were trying to compete with the (then) new medium of television...Vincent Price is at his very best as Prof. Jarrod, and the supporting cast deliver great acting performances as well...enjoy a great classic horror film !

My father took me to see this movie when I was about 6 years old. I remember this movie vividly because it is the only movie I asked to be taken into the lobby because I was so scared. At the time, in the 50's, the 3D movie was a huge novelty, but it's a good horror story as well. A great touch was using the carnie barker with the flyback toy. It had nothing to do with the story line but for the time it made a great 3D effect.

I have only ever seen this film on TV. I saw it first when I was very young in black and white. When we got our first color TV, I remember being excited to see my favorite shows the way they were meant to be seen. I didn’t know at the time, however that many of my of the classic movies I thought I knew had originally been presented in 3D in the theater. Films like “It Came From Outer Space” were a true delight to finally see in 3D. House Of Wax is one such film! In fact it’s the one which started it all! What an amazing experience seeing this film in 3D finally! It felt so fresh! It’s a completely different experience! The release of these classic films in 3D format is the reason we are hanging on to our 3DTV! Well that and the fact that we don’t need or want to open up the can of 4K worms which would be a money pit and cause us to miss our occasional 3D treat! If you have a 3D TV, those two films I mentioned are a must have and far more entertaining than any modern 3D film I’ve seen simply because we get to revisit a childhood experience in a completely “new” way!Read full review
