I got the book b/c my parents have the original box set of the Chronicles of Narnia, but they were missing this book. I found it for really cheap and in great condition on eBay. I read the books in the order that C.S. Lewis wrote them, so that The Magician's Nephew is book 6 not book 1. So, this answered a lot of questions about the creation of Narnia. In this book and The Last Battle (book 7), I'm definately seeing the religious undertones. I'm pretty daft when it comes to literary meanings but this one was pretty apparent. I suggest reading not only this book, but the whole series.
I'm a big Narnia fan! Since entering my second youth :) and now reading these books to my 8 and 10 year old, I had to buy the whole set. This is book #1 and tells the story of how Narnia was created and how the "White witch" enters Narnia in the first place. Love this story, and it kept my kids' attention pretty well. I'm giving it a 4 instead of 5, only because these books are written in British English, and some words are difficult for my American kids to understand. This really slowed down the reading experience, as I constantly had to explain and translate old expressions. I wish there was a more contemporary/US version of this series.
This book is intriguing, thrilling, creative, and humerouse. I love the Narnia movies, but they are not as great as the books. I have highly recommend this book to many others, and they have lived it.
