Sometimes it's the smallest things that hold the most value. True to this fact, the 1901 S Barber Dime is crafted of 90 percent silver, but its true worth lies more with its rich cultural background and unique history. After congress approved new coin designs in 1891, U.S. Mint Director Edward Leech created a competition for independent artists to submit ideas. After that endeavor failed miserably, Leech turned to U.S. Bureau of the Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber and asked him to design a new dime, quarter, and half-dollar. The resulting head of Liberty coins feature a classical Roman style reminiscent of French pieces and were produced from 1892 to 1916. The very limited amount of 1901 Barber dimes produced in San Francisco makes it a rare find worthy of any collection, especially considering its historical background.
