Or almost everything you wanted to know about the Pacific. This remarkable book, which takes place at a moment in the author's life when he was not exactly on top of the world, and is all the more remarkable for that, takes us on a shoreline visit of many of the Pacific's most fabled islands, and many more of the outer ones we are just about certain never to visit. This Massachusetts born writer of Italian/French Canadian descent has an open ear and ability to take and transform the most copious notes in almost any conditions. His camping escapades on various outer islets, some of which are uninhabited, seem scarcely credible, yet Theroux manages to convey each scene convincingly and even I might say, lovingly (even though he had his doubts about many of the places he stopped at). This book can be read for its delicious insight into the various personalities encountered, including kings and prime ministers, as well as for its easy narrative style which catches the colour and simplicity of these far flung locations.Read full review
