What I liked BEST about this book is that in an informed and NON-judmental manner, the author desribes and answers many questions pertaining to those who practice Judaism to the letter of the (Jewish Law). 1.This CAN be informative to people of ALl religions who want to understand any or all Observances that their Jewish friends or neighbors observe, and are afraid to question "lest if offend their practicing and Jwish neighbor." 2. This can ALSO be a valuable addition for non-obbservant Jewish parents (or of mixed marriages) whose CHILDREN raise valid questions about observances taught in Sunday or Hebrew School, or from attending thier friends Bar or Bat Mitzvahs. It cal also help them understand some HOMEWORK assigned by Hebrew School that otherwise may not make sense to them, and leave THE PARENT feeling like they can ALSO be of help innon-Secular homework-NOT TO BE UNDERESTIMATED! 3. I found this book SO informative that I am thinking of giving it as a Gift to such families; as well as a special gift to... 4. FOR Recent and not so recent Souls "Who have chosen their RETURN" as they call it; or COVERTED to Judaism via intensive and committed Judaic & Hebraic studies with creditable Rabbis in the USA , Israel or other countries, in order to convert to Judaism,. For many, whose souls drew them to Judaism, KNOWING that Judaism does NOT seek converts; they did not knw it WAS possible to obtain Judaic Status through sincere & persistent efforts to do this. They finally did, and they NOW observe fully and with a greater committment than many Jewish people (who were born Jewish, yet were not fortunate to receive a non-pediatric Jewish education, or any ay all, & are prey to the CULTS in Search of SOME MEANING in their lives). For these new cultivated weducated & incredibly kind people, this type of Book could make a "Best Gift List."Read full review
I had this book years ago. It answers a lot of questions about why Jewish people follow the rules that they do. Pronunciation cues are the only thing missing.

In this and the other volumes of this series of books, Rabbi Kolatch explains the various Jewish customs that Jews keep. He brings various reasons -Biblical and Talmudic- based upon Jewish sources and anyone who is interested in converting would be extremely rewarded in reading these books. It's easy reading plain english, and not esoteric. Non religious Jews who wish to know more about their heritage will be amply rewarded as well. A win win situation for all those who need to know more about the great Faith of Judaism from which all the other Monotheistic religions sprouted from.
I bought it for a friend. I have a copy and anyone interested in learning about Jewish should consider this book.
