This 1905-O 25C Barber quarter is a valuable piece of United States history. The coin has received the NGC grade of good condition, which means that some of the details of the profile portrait of Liberty on the front of the quarter have been effaced, but the outline of Liberty’s profile is still clearly visible, and the words “In God We Trust” are easily readable near the top of the coin, and the stars around the edges and the “1905” designation at the bottom are also clear on this beautiful silver coin. The coin also has a handsome design on the back. Etched in the silver on the back of the coin is a picture of an eagle and the words “United States of America” at the top and “one quarter dollar” at the bottom of the coin. Barber quarters were made of nine parts silver to one part copper. The Barber quarter weighs 6.3 grams; holding it is a reminder of just how much these coins could buy when they were first in circulation. Named a Named after Charles Barber, the Chief Engraver of the United States Bureau of the Mint, Barber quarters, along with other Barber coins worth 50 cents and a dollar, were minted beginning in 1892 and ending around the time of the First World War, with the mintage varying from year to year. The coins designed by Barber replaced the Seated Liberty design, which had been in use for many years on several denominations of silver coins. This 1905-O Barber quarter was minted in New Orleans. Iin addition to coins from the New Orleans mint, coin collectors can also find Barber quarters minted in San Francisco, Denver, and Philadelphia. The O mintmark indicates that the coin comes from the New Orleans mint. Barber quarters are a desirable collectors’ item because the coins from certain years and certain mints are quite rare, because of low mintage. The 1905-O Barber quarter is a somewhat rare silver coin, with only 123 quarters of that design having been minted in New Orleans that year, so it is still an essential part of any coin collection dedicated to American coins from the early twentieth century. Avid coin collectors will be delighted to add this quarter to their collection of coins. This Barber quarter is more than 100 years old and shows the continuity and change in the history of American coins.
