Joyce Coakley in her Sweetgrass Baskets and the Gullah Tradition gives one a fascinating travelogue through a culture that is fast disappearing from the Charleston/Low Country landscape as the necessary ingredients for these baskets becomes scarce due to population sprawl. However, for any hand-made basket enthusiast/collector, and certainly South Carolina residents and history buffs (especially those interested in Black history. Coakley gives her readers an accurate account of the 300-year-old-heritage of the Mt. Pleasant sweetgrass basket-makers told primarily in annotated pictures. Her book is an interesting and evocative "must read."
If you like to read about American history this was an awesome book to read I also collect the baskets so it made a nice addition to my collection it was very well-written
