"The Ten Commandments" is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular of the epic films by Cecil B. DeMille in not only its scope, but sheer drama. Unfortunately, most of it IS pure drama, for DeMille's creation is mostly fiction. Though he quotes from a very large Bible in a short commentary prior to the feature film, there are only a few scenes that are truly taken straight from Scripture. Many of the characters in the movie are also seen in Scripture, but the reality of their place in the Biblical account is far different from the tale told by DeMille on the big screen. This is a great story but it is just that, for it is not accurate or factual. As long as one views the film from that perspective, and does not hold it to a standard of "the truth and nothing but the truth," it is great entertainment. Too bad DeMille didn't undertake to tell the story like it truly happened. The reality was far more impressive than the fiction the script writers dreamed up. My first impression was that DeMille felt, in typical Hollywood fashion, that the account as recorded in the Bible needed improvement, and he was just the man to do it. He missed a golden opportunity at the pinnacle of his movie-making era in Hollywood to be of service to God and mankind, in making a great film and telling the story just as it really happened. Now, THAT would truly have been epic.Read full review
I'm a preachers daughter and when this movie came out I was 9 years old. It was the only movie my Father allowed me to see. I was owe struck when I saw those events then. Years later I watch it now and still find it amazing even though the ten plagues were not all mentioned they picked the most important ones they could imitate on screen. My favorite of Demille's and still is the scene where Gods finger opens up the sea. DeMille spared no expense to get it right and used the best color available at the time, fifty four years later and it is still my favorite account on film. This is a Classic and my Grandchildren will view it now as I'm proud to use it as a teaching aid about God's power. It's a movie everyone should see.
Only Heston could play this part as Moses and give it the presence it deserved. He is so powerful of an actor in Biblical stories. I have seen several of this type of movie that he stared in and this was his best role. I originally saw this movie as a High School student at a Catholic High School's field trip to a New Orlean's theatre and have never forgotten the feeling that it left in me. It was one of the best movies that He made, along side of "Ben Hur". Nobody else has moved me the way he did with the classic parting of the Red Sea. I highly recommend the watching of THIS version of the movie, I have seen the remake and it dosen't come up to the original at all.
This wonderful classic movie has always been a favorite. So many stars are in this movie. The Ten Commandments is an excellent movie for any time of the year!
