As you may imagine, the U.S. Army knows a thing or two about wilderness survival, and they have put an incredible wealth of information into this handbook. Whether you are a relative novice to wilderness survival, or an experienced survivalist or outdoorsman, this book contains comprehensive information on making fire, finding water, making shelter, acquiring food, psychology, signaling, direction-finding, and information on weapons, tools, and equipment that is easy to understand and utilize. If you only get one book on survival, this would be an excellent choice. For someone that is actually planning on using some of this in real-life situations or wants to be more prepared, I would also recommend a good field guide to edible plants in your expected area- for the western United States I recommend Wild Edible Plants of Western North America by Donald R. Kirk. There is no shortage of good field guides that are primarily east coast based- most are. In short, if you are looking at getting more information on surviving in all types of situations and environments, get this book- you'll be glad you did, and it may just save your life.Read full review
Of all the Field Manuals the Army issued to me over the years, this is one of the few that I haven't given or thrown away. It's designed for soldiers to study and to carry as a reference, especially when they find themselves in survival situations -- trapped behind enemy lines; escape and evasion situations; downed aircraft or ships in distress; etc. I especially like the worldwide nature of its organization, covering a variety of shelter types; foods by zone; and even attitudes that help to ensure survival. One distracting design feature, as with other Army field manuals, is the placement of illustrations and pictures on separate pages from the text/descriptions. It's a minor flaw, however, and can be forgiven when one considers the ultimate goal was to save bulk. This is the same field manual that in its standard printing had a yellow cover (as most of the Vietnam Era field manuals did), but it includes a more exotic cover to sell it to members of the general public. Have no fear, however, it's exactly the same material... Is this the only survival manual I would recommend? No, of course not, but I can't imagine a well-rounded Survival Library without it...Read full review
I purchased this book for my son and he absolutely loves it. His nose is in it every day reading and re-reading over every single page. It's a great way to keep a boy reading during the summer months.
This book will help you and your family prepare for the worst. You know of course, that Obama will not take care of you, so you better learn how to do it yourself.
