Following Buster Crabbe's success on Flash Gordon, the studio thought he was idea to take on the role of Buck Rogers. Drawing elements from the comic strips and mixing them with current themes of the time, this 30's sci fi serial was born. Moving the plot from international war and alien invaders to crime bosses and mob violence, Buck became the future's ultimate crime fighter. Using forgotten knowledge of the past and a spirit of never give in, he rallied the forces of good over evil. Unfortunately it never developed the following of the Flash Gordon serials, and this was both the first and last in the series. This edition includes all the episodes of the serial and the trailer for the serial. Although it lacks the archival level of restoration that would be preferred, they've done a great job of cleaning the print up. It bring back the days when all most houses had was a 15 inch black and white TV. Week end mornings kids snuck out of bed to watch all the silly kid stuff their parents pretended not to like.Read full review
Buster Crabbe was terrific as Flash Gordon. As Flash, he battled a great enemy in Ming, met great alien races and visited various locales. The Buck Rogers serial had a much less imaginative script, a ho-hum heroine and a TERRIBLE villain in Killer Kane. Even the cliffhanger sequences were rather boring and unbelievable. This serial may have historical value, but it pales in comparison to the Flash Gordon serials, especially the first two. It is reasonably priced, but don't get your hopes up too high.
I bought this DVD as I knew it would transport me back to the saturdays I spent as a child watching Buck Rogers. As kids of this time my brothers and I were amazed by science fiction and all that these shows brought into our lives. It was a deciding factor that made me chose a career in electronics. This DVD has a good story line and the special effects were good for that past time frame. The special effects did bring a bit of a laugh as they were of a past time as compared to todays computer generated effects. All in all a great DVD to purchase for those who lived during 1940.
the history of the old serials have amazed me since i saw the actor of buster crabbe in an episode of buck rogers 25 century 30 years later who is in the original buck rogers.
