I bought the book for our book club that I am in. It was an excellent book. I hadn't read the book or seen the movie. After reading the book I was excited to see the movie. The book was well written and kept me interested through the whole thing. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves to read, and especially anyone involved in a book club. We had a terrific discussion about it! It was interesting to learn about the life of a geisha and set me straight about misconceptions I had before reading the book. The author did years of research on this book, and actually wrote at least one other manuscript before publishing this one. He wanted to portray the life of a geisha correctly, and although it is a novel I had a hard time remembering that while reading. I kept wanting to believe that I was actually reading a geisha's memoirs.Read full review
As a modern-day woman, the content of the story made me want to give it a lower rating. But I can't do it. I'm very busy and the book kept me captivated for the 2 days that it took me to read it. In the opening of the book, the two young girls are treated unfairly - which later worsens to abuse. It's difficult to read those parts, but it ends just about the time you (as a woman, I guess) would say - "Okay, I've read just about enough of this". Even when the tables do turn in favor toward the protagonist, it's not a fate I would call coveted. She is exploited for her beauty, and unable to make her life her own. She just does the best she can, which although is disheartening, made for a very good story. I had to give it an excellent rating and I plan to now watch the movie. Kim.
Anyone who is facinated with ancient cultures will love Memoirs of a Geisha. At first I felt like I needed a dictionary or an inturpitor with me to figure out how to say some of the words or what some of the customs mentioned where about, and the book is slow at the beginning, so I actually put it down and had to come back to it over a few days. Once you get into it - you defiantly get addicted it the story, find yourself right with her as she tries to better herself and her situation. When the opportunity to seek revenge amoungst a memeber of the household comes to her - that when her life honestly starts to become her own. the love story is epic, and you find yourself hoping, dreaming and wishing right along with her. Its a beautiful story - one you will definatly remember.
I had thought about reading this book some time ago but decided against it . It was then recommended to me by a friend that likes it so well he read it twice. I still did not want to read it however he insisted so much that I read it that he gave me a copy of it andd then kept asking me if I had started reading it. I finally did and before you knew it I was really into the book. It was so very very good, well written and I learned about the Japanese culture. I would recommend this book to anyone. The movie is not as good as the book. It is a good read for the summer.
I thought this book was well written. He researched the life of a geisha and I think it was acurate. It was gripping, and sometimes sad. No objectional language, violence or sex. I would recommend this book to women's bookclubs.
