Enola Gay--what is that? is the question many of my high school students ask when they see the topic on a list of research projects from which they must choose. Invariably someone picks it who thinks it is about gay rights. What a big surprise for them. I bought this for my high school history classes--world and US. It has two programs on it--Enola Gay: Rain of Ruin and Hiroshima: The Decision to Drop the Bomb. I would only use one of them for a class since quite a bit of the material appears in both. But they are both equally worthwhile. Enola Gay does focus more on the plane than Hiroshima does. Overall, the programs go over the development of the atomic bomb and its devastation after deployment. Hiroshima goes into more of Truman's motivation and decision-making. As a set, they are complementary. As a classroom resource, I would only take the time to use one. If one is teaching world and US, then I'd use one for each. Each is about 70-75 minutes in length. If you are a WWII buff, you'll love this set.Read full review
Quite possibly one of the most famous airplanes in American history, the Enola Gay B-29 Super Fortress dropped the first atomic bomb in history on Hiroshima, Japan in August, 1945. This blast killed 70,000 immediately and probably almost that many more over the next five years from related sickness. This movie chronicles the development of the bombs and the training of the crews to do whatever was necessary to succeed. The security aspects of this training required extraordinary secrecy. The base in the South Pacific where the attacks were to be flown was the island of Tinian. The bomb was named "Little Boy".
this is a documentary that tells the remarkable story of America’s decision to forever alter the course of history. It is well done with interviews and actual footage of the bombings themselves. I highly recommend this overall as there is a wealth of information contained within it.

I wanted to watch the footage of the flight of the Enola Gay. Because the navigator of the Enola Gay, T.J. "Dutch" Vankirk is my father cousin. His mother and my dads mother were sisters. The film footage was great to watch and to have to study again.
This was a gift for a friend who loves any thing about World War II and the planes that were used during that era. He thinks this is one of the best documentary movies he has seen about Enola Gay. He loves it!
