One of the best books I've ever read. DeMille is a super author. Lots of twists and turns and very suspenseful

Although the book is in excellent shape, I find disappointment in the author. Seems rather wordy and chapters are extremely long. I enjoy a book where I can anticipate the end of a chapter so I can place a bookmark and continue at a later time.

Murder, pirate treasure, government conspiracy, rich and famous lifestyles of Long Island's Gold Coast, wine country, this novel has it all. Written in authoritative first person style through the eyes of a New York City detective on special assignment to the Suffolk County Police Departments, this novel is spellbinding with subplots galore. Well researched in terms of community locations, maps, geographical and oceanographic lore, and history, you cannot put this book down. Even the ending is unpredictable as the villain has all the edges. Every one of this author's novels are detailed but this is his best so far. If you can't vacation in the Hampton's this year, reading this novel is the next best thing. Enjoy!!!
I've read most of Demille's books and Plum Island is far and away his best. The storyline lends to many imaginative themes which would seem normally at odds with eachother (germ warfare, pirate treasure, love story, government plots, crime drama, etc ...) but are very expertly weaved together to create a very original plot line. The book's real glue comes from the main character, a wise cracking burnt out cop (this is the type of character Demille seems to write best and this is the best of the best) who traverses the plot lines in first person story telling. The character is well defined, applied with a great personality and grows on you very quickly. The other cast of characters are rich, well done and very enjoyable (even on to other titles of Demille's). The only partial con I can think of is that the storyline, when summarized out loud sounds a little far fetched, however this is the kind of far fetched stuff you enjoy reading.Read full review
The first of an excellent series of crime novels that follow the assignments and challenges of a medically retired NYPD detective. The plots are laced with humor and romance, and take place in well-researched real-life settings. Best best if read in proper sequence.
