This series has it all. It tackles provocative and difficult situations with not only humour but also with intelligence and compassion. Aidan Quinn is superb as the Rev. Daniel Webster, a minister, who not only has to cope with a family who is anything but conventional, but who also often finds himself crossing swords with the church hierarchy led by Ellen Burstyn as the Bishop. He is often guided through these difficult times by 'Jesus' (who only he can see). 'Jesus' has a good grip on modern day life and a good sense of humour. I believe it was taken off the air after a few weeks in the USA because it offended some people... I can't imagine why - it is not in the least bit sacrilegious - unless you are extremely narrow minded, or just looking for something to complain about! The script is very well written, the acting impressive, and I can only hope that they make a second series. It is definitely worth buying.Read full review

I bought the dvds because I only saw the last broadcast episode and was interested in seeing the rest. I enjoy this show because I think the situations are humorous, intentionally or unintentionally, and because the faith aspects make me think. Mostly I enjoy the interactions between Daniel and Jesus. Daniel is a good man trying to navigate through some challenging life situations, and he talks to Jesus to help him through them. Some find the situations offensive, but it's only TV and not real life. If it makes you think, the show serves its purpose.
THE BEST SHOW ON TV SINCE M*A*S*H! A powerful and profound series that examines all sorts of relationships, including man's (in the person of Daniel) with Jesus, and by extension, with God. However, this is not a show for or about "Bible-thumpers" -- it is about a group of very believeable characters, their interactions, trials and tribulations; much better and more believeable that most of the tripe on TV now. It treats subjects with humour (much like M*A*S*H) but allows the profound to show through also. The characters are very human and though no single group would ever have all these things happen to them, this series (much too short a series) examines all the "adventures" with grace, style, good humour and dignity! If you miss this one, it's your loss!!!!Read full review
Time magazine did a spread on the controversial new show "Book of Daniel" and gave it a very positive review. Within a few weeks, the two-hour Pilot episode aired and the U.S. backlash began. Four weeks later, with only four episodes having shown on Primetime television, the station canceled the show because of the overwhelming viewer feedback. Few times in my life has my country disappointed me as much as the day conservative America won and "Book of Daniel" left television forever. Created by a somewhat-religious homosexual, the show features Aidan Quinn as the family patriarch and leader of an Episcopalian church on his quest to build a new school with hard-earned church dollars. Add to his daily routine his Vicodin addiction, a neurotic wife (and her very flaky sometimes-lesbian sister), a pot-dealing anime-producing daughter, a Japanese adopted son with a raging libido for his blond-hair blue-eyed conservative-family-daughter girlfriend, a almost-closeted homosexual son, ties with the Mafia and tit-a-tits with Jesus himself, and the result is one of the most clever and witty shows to hit television in years. Featured in this 2-disc set, the complete series unfolds with the four familiar episodes and four never-before-aired episodes that end the series right in the middle of a climax. This is obscenely worth everyone's time to check out!Read full review
