'Though Lavey recorded another 3 (three) tracks for obscure, Cali-based independent labels, this CD represents the most complete compilation to be had. Not to say that this necessarily comprised the complete repertoire of Mr. Lavey, though. As he was known to work regularly as the organnist at the Cali lounge, 'Lost Weekend.' And notwithstanding that the compilation includes numerous variations of what were not his compositions, the dint of skillful improvisation as well as original opuses suffice to support his musicianship. Much of the music industry has a status quo. Artists that are conjsidered to be too radical are rejected over those that have a typical profile for consumers. So there are a coterie of scarcely known but excellent musicians; Richard Lynch, Ansel Adams, ________________ and et al. Lavey must be considered to be among them. If his image had been typical enough for the ears of geekdom, yuppie nation and the other majority groups that dictate the culture of the country, he would also have received financial sponsorship, endorsement from name capitalists and the usual subscriptions associated with those enterprises. But he chose not to compromise himself, presenting an image of a staunch individualist with views that were contrary to those of the petit beurgeosie tastes of the culture. Of the i8 (eighteen) tracks of the CD, 9 of them are covers, unless you include the medley of variations on what could be considered standard theater organ repertoire. Listeners should remember that a theater organ may be used to imitate a church's pipe organ, not the other way around. Imitating a pipe organ on a theater organ thus amounts to a sort of musical satire. And the repertoires for each of those two instruments are obviously quite dissimilar. Because of the complexity of the organ, though, the recognition of an organist very most often depends directly upon the instruments that they have performed upon. Obscure organists often gain their status because of having been recruited for, or having produced themselves on certain famous instruments. That has to do with the tradition of the instrument and thus has tended to produce a sort of clique, or selective society of organists. There are also trade guilds similar to unions and vocational schls with no other subject being taught except the organ. The instrument has been referred to as, 'The King Of Instruments' because even technically speaking, organs are designed to imitate most other instruments, including some imaginary and fantastic. To wit, suppose that Lavey had been invited to perform on the great Wurlitzer that formerly was installed at the Chicago auditorium? That Wurlitzer was the largest instrument of that sort ever known and included a complete array of sound effects that were produced mechanically. But perhaps Anton recognized that the giant Wurlitzer was actually a machine, And he obviously had a very spiritual side to him. To the extent that compromises to the spirituality of his lifestyle would have had to be considered before the demands of the mechanical behemoth. So we must recognize the genre of a lot of the CD as having been thus derived; these nine cover variations are typical for both the genre and the instrument, that having been specifically an electric lounge theater organ. Still quite complex for a lounge club instrument, they were really the forerunner of today's electronic keyboard and synthesizer.'Read full review
I bought this CD on ebay for an Xmas present for my brother. He has always had a fascination w/ Satan. LOL! He absolutly loved and played it while we had Xmas dinner. Every song had a deep organ sound to it and alot of it was about love. Which I thought was very funny. It was serious and funny. I really liked that my brother liked it so much. The only I didnt like about it, was all the songs sounded alike.
a disc very interesting, shows so much to his style, a facet difficult to imagine by the great Anton Szandor Lavey! Covers of classic songs, some interests shares of people involved in the Church of Satan (especially vocals). In short, a work full of curiosities, funeral rhythms played on piano by the same Lavey, definitely a memorable archive.
Thank you Excellent product. Music is highly nostalgic. Reminiscent of olden days of Samhain. Highly recommend.
