Harry Nilsson's life was cut short but he left us a wonderful gift with his music. This tribute by a very diverse group of artists has some homeruns and some whiffs. High points include Randy Newman's version of "Remember", Marshall Crenshaw's "Don't Forget Me" and Jimmy Webb's version of "Lifeline". I was surprized by some of the selections chosen and a few songs didn't fit the performers such as "Spaceman" by the Roche sisters, who I really like. I could have thought of a number of other of his songs they would have shined with. The good news is that there are 23 selections so there is plenty to choose from. If you're like me and miss Harry Nilsson, you'll enjoy this tribute.
I was actually looking for another artist (who is included in this compilation) when I chanced across this gem. I'm of the age that I remember Harry Nilsson, and I enjoyed him back then. But I'd forgotten how beautiful his lyrics could be, how meaningful. And that's another part of how good this selection is, the artists renditions of Harry's songs, I'm sure would have made Harry proud. The songs are funny and smart and definitive of the times. I love listening to it. It makes me hapy, it makes me melancholy, it makes me sad he's no longer with us. I think that's what music should do.
