I watched the six hour documentuary on Grant on the History Channel. Grant was the master mind that led to the Confederacy's defeat. Grant wrote his memoirs while dying of cancer. He finished the last page a few days before he died. Mark Twain incouaged Grant to write his Memoirs. The book is close to twelve hundred pages. I am still reading it at a slow pace and find myself thinking abiut life in the mid 1800's as Grants writing ability matches his military genious.

Despite how long this book is, I find it very readable and humorous and not dry or stuffy in the least. I read a chapter nightly. This book is not something I would ordinarily find so compelling, but I saw a documentary on Amazon, and was intrigued. It helped me understand a lot of what was going on prior to the Civil War and the earlier parts go into detail about the Mexican was which was something I was pretty unaware of.
