Outside the Bungalow by Douglas Keister, Paul Duchscherer (1999) Filled with beautiful pictures and helpful copy that will inspire and enchant those who dream of the peaceful life that the mind conjures up when considering a move to a Bungalow. In considering home decor, rarely does one begin with the outside, the gardens, paths, seating areas, planting schemes. This book rightly begins where the first impressions are made, in the gardens. As we ponder the possibilities and challenges of a well designed garden, the size is often the road block, past which many never travel. This well illustrated book quickly removes those blocks as it opens a world of possibilities and treatments. Many of the ideas set forth in the book can easily be used in other places with the same inspired success. Recommended to anyone with a bungalow, a window box or a rolling hilled estate. Still most compatible and appropriate when used in the surrounding grounds of a Bungalow, the book is never the less a worth-while addition to any home library.Read full review
I really like the photos and it is exactly the style I like. It is full of ideas and gives the names of the plants used which is very helpful for getting that look!! I would highly recommend it- the historic overview of the Arts and Crafts movement was especially interesting. Now I know why I also like medieval style also! The book includes individual sections on different areas of the gardens. These areas include garden enclosures, openings such as gates, arbors, portals, cooling elements, ways to travel through the garden, furnishing the outdoor garden, playing up views and other details that personalize your garden! It is a great book!
For anyone who is interested in studying the American Craftsman style, popular in CA & WA, as well as the WNC area, this is an excellent resource, for an amazing price.

Because of my interest in vintage homes, I often by books that cover aspects of what older homes oringinally looked like. I'm in the business of helping people restore early 1900's homes and like to show them what was done in that time period and how that can be adapted to today's living. This particular books covers the gardens and grounds of such houses and again, offers a glimpse of what on would expect to find if they were to peer between the hedges of one of these old grand estates. The book certainly lived up to my expectations, thanks.
I bought this as a design reference book for my landscape design business and it is an excellent overview of the craftsman style.
