"The Recollections & Letters of Robert E. Lee" brought the true REL forward. The War Between the States brought out many of his qualities, but the letters to his wife and family brought out his humanism. This is a book I couldn't put down and stayed up more than one night reading his letters. His love for his children and wife; his devotedness to his friends and relatives; his joy with any child, brought out his true likeness. The frustrations he felt during the War; his sadness at death and destruction; his steadfast faith in God; proved what a great man he was in all aspects of his life. The aftermath of the War and the treatment of the Confederates, both combatants and innocent; their hunger and pain, was born by General Lee.
As far as secular reading and compelling content this is my favorite book. Even if I were not a history buff, this is such a literary great! The letters are masterpieces in culture and language. Every student should read it.
