Christensen's art is a voyage of discovery, the perfect place to spark the imagination of a child or the child-grown-old. Foster's story takes the reader through a kaleidoscope of figures from classical mythology, the stuff of universal thought used in unexpected ways, as they are presented to two young girls - one who relishes the world of the imagination and her sister who is acting all too grown up for such nonsense after the recent lost of their mother. Their father has also lost his equilibrium with the loss of his wife, but embarks on the adventure with his daughters because he is willing to go beyond his loss in order to find joy again, embracing the motto "By believing, one sees." The author and artist collaboration is also about allowing oneself to experience the whole spectrum of emotions- fear, joy, loss, wonder, et al, in allowing the world to unfold without attempting to control it based on rigid expectations. Christensen's art is populated by such things as fish that float through the air and creatures that are both familiar and surprising, often in unexpected scale to delight the eye. Fairies, trolls, gremlins, and a host of other beings play their parts in the symphony of images. The artist represents the burdens we carry through life as a hump or mound between the shoulder blades of certain characters or through elaborate costumes that declare the characters' sense of importance in their roles, but also restrict their freedom of movement. What we experience as beauty might also be absurd, yet we are drawn to the richness of detail, which takes us deeper and deeper into this world of imagery if we are willing to allow ourselves to suspend judgment long enough to see others in new light. A masterpiece of art and literature that belongs in every library.Read full review

This book is a visual interpretation of those things we have heard of but have never seen. The motto "Credendo Vides" given insight to what many of us lose with age - the ability to imagine and see those things unseen. Voyage of the Basset is one of the premier books on the imagination. The graphics are unsurpased and the book holds ones interest until the end. This is one of those books you can read over and over and over again. Excellent from start to finish. A book that is destined to become a classic far into the future. A must read book for anyone that believes that All Things are Possible if we just believe.
When I bought this book what I was immediately drawn to was the illustrations. After reading it I equally loved the story as well as the illustrations. The story teaches to both children and adult readers that by believing one sees which is true not only with the fantasy side of life but also with real life. An excellent read with a sweet and exciting story that covers all different aspects of fantasy and mythology.
Because James Christensen was a genius, and everything he did reflects as much, it would be a cold heart to not get a smile or a laugh out loud when going thru this book!
